Description

Although historically Juan Diego was much older when the Guadalupe event took place, I wanted to depict the wonder and vigor of his spirit. Juan Diego is pictured here in native decoration, symbolizing his role as the representative of the Mexican nation in receiving the most wonderful gift of the image of The Virgin of Guadalupe. If you are unfamiliar with the story, In December of 1531, during a series of events where The Virgin appeared to Juan Diego, and told him a church was to be constructed, the local bishop told him that he required a sign of the veracity of Juan Diego's story. He returned to the hill where it all began, only to find, miraculously, roses blooming. He gathered an armful in his cloak, returned to the village and opened his cloak before the bishop, as the roses all fell to the ground, the image of the Virgin could be seen on his cloak. It has always been one of my favorite stories.
